Mellon Foundation Awards $500K to ICCS

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded $500,000 to the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS) to support the position of Professor-in-Charge (PiC). Located in Rome, ICCS is an intensive study abroad program focused on Greek, Latin, ancient history, archaeology, and the topography of the ancient city. Since its establishment in 1965, the ICCS has trained over 3000 American undergraduates. The Mellon Foundation awarded $400,000 to ICCS in 2011 to support the PiC position.

Professor Michael Maas, Chair of the ICCS Managing Committee and Professor of History and Classical Studies at Rice University, remarked that “This award from the Mellon Foundation is a vote of confidence in our program and its educational goals. Not only have our students gone on to careers in all aspects of Classical Studies as well as other academic fields, they also have pursued careers in secondary school administration, museums and fine arts, law, medicine, journalism, and business. We very much appreciate the Mellon Foundation’s generosity and recognition of the impact our program has made across the nation.”
